On July 21st, 2025, JFCY was granted leave to intervene in a judicial review before the Divisional Court in Thunder Bay. The decision under review was made by the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario (“HRTO”) on November 20th, 2024. In Borderland Pride v. Corporation of the Township of Emo, 2024 HRTO 1651, the HRTO found that that the Township of Emo and its Mayor discriminated in 2020 when Borderland Pride’s request for a proclamation that June be declared “Pride Month” by the Town and that it display an LGBTQ2 rainbow flag for a week was denied.
As intervener, JFCY aims to ensure the rights and interests of young people, and 2SLGBTQIA+ children and young people in particular impacted by this decision are considered. JFYC will provide a unique perspective on the principle of the best interests of the child and the human rights of children in relation to the issues raised in this appeal.
The hearing in this matter is yet to be scheduled.
